Shipping a container has been a complex process for many years. Manual and inefficient, the buying and booking process has often been filled with many unpleasant surprises. With the introduction of Sealand Spot, Sealand – A Maersk Company launches a truly online product that can break the cycle of over-bookings and offer a much simpler way to ship a container with load guarantee.

The new online product provides customers a cargo loading guarantee at a fixed price upfront. With the launch of the new product, Sealand – A Maersk Company takes further steps towards simplifying the supply chains of its customers by addressing some of the fundamental inefficiencies that exist across the industry. It is not uncommon to see over-bookings of 30%, and often this leads to rolling of the customers’ containers as the overbooking is made to compensate for the high downfall in bookings.

With Sealand Spot, customers can search and get competitive rates online 24/7. The all-in-one price is calculated based on customer demand, meaning the earlier the customers book the better prices they are offered. The price is fixed when the booking is confirmed – which happens instantly – both the customer and the carrier are committed: the customer to deliver the cargo on time and the carrier to load the customers’ containers. This is a mutual business relation that Sealand – A Maersk Company likes.

This commitment ensures that the vicious cycle of over-bookings is addressed. In case of booking cancellations, fees apply at the customer’s charge. If cargo is rolled, Sealand – A Maersk Company compensates the customer. The mutual commitment paired with increased visibility of sailings and certainty of prices has to date been embraced by thousands of Maersk’s customers and now it’s a pleasure to launch the product for Sealand – A Maersk Company’s customers.

One of the customers already using Maersk Spot is The Ramco Cements Limited. The company sends around 120-200 containers from Kattupalli port to Colombo every week, making their bookings one to two weeks in advance to ensure that they can deliver to their customers on time with the best deal possible.

“We are quite proactive about our bookings but there were still cases where our shipments were not loaded due to capacity issues which resulted in the loss of trust with some of our customers,” says Ramakrishnan D, General Marketing Manager of The Ramco Cements Limited. “With Maersk Spot, we no longer have the uncertainty of not knowing if we can actually provide our customers with their shipments.”

By going to the Sealand Spot booking page, customers can check if their preferred shipment route offers Spot pricing. By end of Q2 it is expected to have Sealand Spot launched to all corridors across Sealand – A Maersk Company’s scope, covering North, Central and South Americas, Europe and the Mediterranean region, as well as Asia and Indonesia.
